Vernon Parish Shooting

Last night, Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office was involved in a shooting.

The Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call around 8:00 pm from the location of 109 McElveen Road, Anacoco, LA. The caller requested assistance with a domestic situation involving her ex-husband, identified as Mark Odom Self (W/M 38 yrs) of 109 McElveen Road, Anacoco, LA.

Deputies arrived at the residence to find the caller outside and Self at the front doorway. He was irate and was not allowing the deputies to enter. The deputies escorted the caller to a safer location when a weapon was spotted in reach of Self. He allowed his seventeen-year-old daughter to exit the residence and both the caller and the juvenile were escorted to a family member’s residence. The caller provided information that her ex-husband had been drinking heavily all day and that he struck her several times before deputies arrived.

The deputies attempted to speak to Self, but he continued to be belligerent and refused to exit the residence or relinquish the rifle. After repeated commands to exit, he refused to comply with the commands and pointed the weapon at the deputies. Two deputies fired their weapons striking him.

Self was pronounced dead on the scene.

The Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations/Alexandria Field Office responded to the scene at the request of the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office to investigate the incident. An investigation is ongoing at this time.
