Dirt Bike Involved In Fatal Crash
A crash involving a dirt bike and a truck has killed a young man in Winn Parish. The crash occurred early yesterday evening on a gravel road.
Troopers responded to the crash around 6:47 pm, which occurred on Ponds Road approximately one mile off US Hwy 84. The crash involved a 2008 Honda motorcycle (dirt bike), driven by Cory Richard Ponds (W/M 24 yrs) of Urania, LA and a 2000 Dodge pickup, driven by Dena L. Allen (W/F 46 yrs) of Trout, LA. The motorcycle was east bound, but was in the west bound lane as it met the west bound Dodge in a slight curve. The Dodge attempted evasive action by steering to the right, but was unsuccessful which resulted in a head on collision.
Cory Ponds was ejected from the motorcycle and was not wearing a helmet. He was transported to Hardtner Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Allen was wearing her seatbelt and was not injured. Her only two passengers, Richard Ponds (50 yrs) and a juvenile, were restrained and were not injured. Richard Ponds is the father of Cory Ponds.
Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.
Troop E Troopers have investigated 24 fatal crashes for the year of 2009, resulting in 26 fatalities. Thirteen of the 18 fatal crashes (passenger vehicles only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. Two crashes have involved a motorcycle, three have involved a pedestrian, and one has involved an off road vehicle.
